Dating between conservative and liberal singles is discussed. Conservative - liberal dating is not recommended. Couples attracted to each other have enough problems staying together without introducing the problem of conservative-liberal disagreements. Conservative-liberal differences would not have been a great problem a few decades ago but, in the Rush Limbaugh and George Bush era, things have changes. Now you either "with us or against us."
It is a jungle out there!
A marriage is difficult enough to make work. The more "like" items a couple has in their favor, the more likely a relationship, e.g., dating, marriage, etc., will work out. Let’s face it! Well over 50% of first marriages in America now end in divorce. If you think that is a desirable state of affairs, let me take you to some broken homes and let you see the damage that has been caused among both children and spouses.
Forget all the fun movies and the few real-life examples about political opposites meeting, dating, falling in love, and living happily ever after. It happens! Just like an asteroid striking the earth every few hundred million years and wiping out dinosaurs and other forms of life. Eventually, it will happen again. But don't stay up nights worrying about it.
Sure, James Carville and Mary Matalin are 100% opposite of each other in their political views (James is very liberal and Mary is very conservative) and they appear to get along fine. However, for every "opposites" couple like James and Mary that make it, there are dozens of couples where the "opposites attract" myth doesn’t work in the long run.
It is not me causing the problem! It is the present political system. Don't listen to the myth that Americans are become assimilated and soon are going to be one homogenized race with the same political views and you can date whoever you want with no problems. The myth isn’t happening and you are asking for trouble if you start dating your political opposites.
Your date or marriage partner with the opposite political views and who, by the way, may be listening to Rush Limbaugh three hours a day, is going to have to unload you some day because you are trying to save the whale or partaking in some other ridiculous (in his mind) liberal cause.
Prevent the problem by not dating the person!
As noted above, Americans are not coming together politically. Just the opposite! They are moving into two distinct camps – the liberal camp and the conservative camp. The two camps don’t tolerate each other (they literally despise each other because they are being constantly told to do so by professional muck rakers, e.g., Rush Limbaugh, Ann Coulter) and, unless you and the person you want to date have the same political views or are totally non-political, you shouldn’t date.
At one time, I didn't think Americans would allow themselves to be so divided by unscrupulous politicians. Unfortunately, they appear more than willing to be the victim and this inclination to be politically divided has increased after the election (appointment) of George W. Bush as president and, particularly, after 9/11.
It is a shame that such a no-dating recommendation has to be made for conservative - liberal political opposites. Twenty or so years ago, such a recommendation that conservative - liberal singles not date would have been laughed at.
This present state of affairs did not arise accidentally. In recent years, the conservatives were clever enough to see that, if they could split the population into two deeply divided camps and control the politically-stronger camp, they could control the country. It has worked fine for them and the conservatives now are in full control of the country and getting fat and sassy (or were until the 2006 elections!). The fact that they have virtually destroyed the nation’s unity doesn’t seem to faze them. And virtually every sign is that the chiasm between the conservative and liberal camps will widen.
So, if you are a liberal and want to date a conservative (if they will agree to date you), do the dating at your own peril. Be prepared to listen to Rush Limbaugh three hours straight each day and don’t get involved in any campaigns to save the whale or to prevent global warming. Even mentioning the name of a liberal like Al Gore will get you in a heap of trouble.
But, of course, if you can handle the ranting of Rush Limbaugh and, if you think, deep-down, that Al Gore is just another pointy-headed liberal, go for it!
If you are a conservative and want to date a liberal, be prepared to start opposing the Iraq War, a war you know you dearly love & support with all your heart. And don't mention Rush Limbaugh's or Ann Coulter's names even though you really like their style as they spear liberals.
There is little compromising in those views. So be smart, date someone with your own political views.
Hopefully, this manufactured hatred between the liberals and conservatives will disappear some day but don’t bet your dating on it. You need to spend your date time finding a suitable life partner and not arguing about whether Bill Clinton or George W. Bush is the worst president ever.
This is nowhere near as strong a recommendation as the no dating recommendation for liberals and conservatives discussed above. My wife is Catholic and I am a Baptist and we get along fine. However, our political beliefs are virtually identical. Also, my political beliefs are much stronger than my religious beliefs so religion is just not an issue with us.
What I am afraid of with religion goes back to the liberal - conservative dating problem. Conservatives are moving rapidly to take control of many of the churches of America. If you and your date belong to one of these controlled churches and agree with the tenets of the church and the tenets of those who control the church, well and good. But, if your date belongs to, and believes in the tenets of a controlled church and you don’t belong and don't believe in that church, get ready to rumble!
Isn’t it amazing how political fanatics are screwing up your dating plans as well as screwing up the country? Churches should be there for the support of parishioners, e.g., those parishioners seeking life partners. They should not be there for the purpose of electing political candidates.
Christian dating is not what it used to be!
Yes, doctors sometimes date nurses. However, doctors and nurses get married only about as frequently as the earth is struck by a large asteroid such as was previously discussed.
Face it folks! The same forces that are driving a wedge between the American people on a political basis are also driving the wedge on the socio/economic basis. For example: Tax breaks for the rich but reduced social security benefits for the middle and lower classes; fat defense contracts for the well-connected but cannon-fodder soldiers for Iraq from the poor and lower middle class; CEO positions for the well-connected but Burger King jobs for the lower classes.
Driving this wedge between the classes and protecting the class privileges of those in the upper classes virtually guarantees political and financial support (and reelection) from the upper classes for the political party controlling things.
For successful dating and a successful marriage, do your dating within your socio/economic class (and work for the political defeat of those who have created the chiasms between the classes).
Dating is not the way it used to be and it is going to get tougher as pressure is put on couples due the increasingly sharp political division in the country between the conservatives and the liberals. Conservatives and liberals shouldn't date!
