George Soros, rich liberal, has a role in the ongoing conservative - liberal struggle which is examined in this web page.
George Soros, billionaire financier, has a new goal in life: kicking George W. Bush out of the White House! Soros is 77 now but his advancing age doesn't show. His all-consuming goal of ousting President Bush has kept him young. This web page chronicles this tale of a man who was born in Hungary and saw that country occupied by Hitler's Nazi Germany, who later lived under Soviet Communist occupation, and who now sees his adapted nation - the United States - heading toward possibly a totalitarian government and who is determined to do something to prevent that from happening.
Note: In the election of 2004, Mr. Soros' attempt to remove President Bush from office was unsuccessful. Will George Soros stay active in opposing other Republicans as the presidential election of 2008 approaches? That would probably be for the best. Most of the wealthy class are on the conservative side. It helps to have one rich guy on the liberal side.
George Soros Goal to Defeat Bush. When George Soros heard President George W. Bush say, "You are either with us or against us," he became very upset. This was not the kind of political talk he wanted to hear from an American president. He had heard that kind of absolutist talk in Germany under, first, Hitler and then under the Communists and "This is not the America I chose as my home."
George Soros does not like the George Bush brand of politics.
George Soros is not the kind of man who has to "take it" as so many of us poorer folks do. He is a multibillionaire who has, on several occasions, won or lost more money in a single venture than is contained in the annual budget of my home state of Louisiana. When he wants to do something, he has both the brains and the money to do it. He made plans to take on George Bush. "It became the central focus of my life. The 2004 presidential race was a matter of life and death." He also said, "America, under Bush, is a danger to the world."
Now that President Bush has been returned to office for the second term, will George Soros remain active during the final year of the Bush administration?
George Soros Takes Political Action. After 9/11, and after President Bush had made his absolutist statement, "You are either with us or against us," George Soros studied the political scene in the United States. As a good strategist, he was not interested in action for the sake of action. He wanted effective action.
What Soros saw when he studied the terrain would have dismayed a lesser man. He saw a Democratic Party that had not recovered from the 2000 loss. The party seemed unable or unwilling to effectively oppose Bush as he led the country to war. They seemed paralyzed. Many of them hated Bush with a passion but they were having trouble getting things going. They had no money and they had no one like George Soros planning things. The odds greatly favored Bush's reelection.
But Soros keen observation skills, honed by making billions betting on observed discrepancies in financial matters (hedging), had allowed him to see things the others didn't see. He saw (or thought he saw) that Bush was vulnerable.
Soros Aids the Liberals. In the summer of 2003, Soros wanted to make sure. He began discussing the matter with the best brains of the liberal establishment. Enough of them agreed with him about Bush's vulnerability that he swung into action.
Soros Political Contributions to Democrats. And when George Soros swings into action, look out! He immediately began putting his money where it could do some good. He contributed $3 million to John Podesta's new liberal think tank, the Center for American Progress. $10 million was promised to America Coming Together (ACT), a very active get-out-the-vote liberal organization. $5 million more went to the innovative moveon.org, an organization that was heavily involved in Howard Dean's successful money-raising and organizing campaign.
Despite the above contributions, some liberals have stated that Soros, considering his $7 billion wealth should have given more. However, it should be noted that, once Soros stepped forward with his contributions, other wealthy liberal friends of his also stepped forward and began contributing. This was one of Soro's goals: to get others involved.
Soros & Democratic Primaries & General Election. George Soros got involved in the Democratic primaries contributing funds to Governor Howard Dean, General Wesley Clark, and Representative Dick Gephardt. He was also heavily involved in supporting Senator John Kerry in the general election.
Soros became concerned when Kerry's poll numbers dipped as a result of the heavy attack from the Republicans, e.g., Swift Boat Veterans for Truth, and he decided to take a more personal role in the campaign. He began taking out ads in swing state media and making speeches in swing states attacking President Bush.
Soros' Book. Soros has also written a book which details his complaints about the Bush Administration's foreign policy and ultra-conservative philosophy. The book, The Bubble of American Supremacy, received considerable attention due to the author's celebrity status. I have not read the book but have read voluminous reviews of it. It is apparently an important document in the fight against the Bush Administration but there is some complaint among reviewers that recent books by other authors critiquing the Bush Administration do a better job.
Soros Philantropic Actions. It should be noted that George Soros has engaged in very successful philanthropic ventures in the world. His most famous was his financial assistance to the republics breaking away from the old Soviet Union. $5 billion (yes, five billion dollars!) went into this effort. Soros is not afraid to put his money up!
Soros' Influence in Democratic Party. So, what happens now that the elections of 2004 and 2006 are over and President Bush is still in office. Soros' influence within the Democratic ranks will be enormous if the 77 year old billionaire remains active. There is still the 2008 presidential election and Soros, hopefully, will be working the election serving as a much-needed counter to the big boys of the conservative movement.
For more on the political campaigns of 2004, 2006 & 2008, refer to Political Issues 2008 and Presidential Candidates.
1. Election 2008. The Democrats won both the Senate and the House of Representatives in the midterm election of 2006.
2. Conservatism vs. Liberalism. There are many public political issues but the underlying issue is conservatism vs liberalism.
George Soros, rich liberal, lost in his effort to remove George Bush from office in the presidential election of 2004. Will George Soros' brand of politics continue to be play a part in Democratic politics?
