This web page will discuss New Orleans antiques and collectibles found in the city of New Orleans and the parishes surrounding New Orleans. The antiques and collectibles of Magazine Street are featured.
New Orleans antiques and collectibles are found in one of the most unique cities in the United States. New Orleans is an old city with a cultural background rivaled only by a few cities such as San Francisco and New York. The Mississippi River runs through the city as it approaches the Gulf of Mexico. On the banks of the river, lies the French Quarter with the wonderful streets - Royal, Decatur, and Bourbon - loaded with antiques and collectibles. Away from the French Quarter lies Magazine Street, a haven for antique and collectible lovers. Magazine Street may have the largest collection of antiques of any one street in the United States.
My wife & I were former owners of an antique shop in New Orleans but other business interests required me to move my work location to Baton Rouge (90 miles from New Orleans) and we had to close the antiques shop.
Despite the wonderful attributes discussed above about the New Orleans antiques business, the city's antiques business was largely shut down due to Hurricane Katrina and the resulting flood which devastated the city on August 29, 2005. Shortly after the hurricane & flood, there were some great antique bargains in New Orleans. Unfortunately, some shop owners were desperate. About six months ago, my wife bought two cypress bookcases - the smaller one for $100 and thhe large one for $200. Those are incredible prices (at least 50% maybe 75% off) for cypress..
What, you say! There were probably flooded in the hurricane flood! They weren't, but even if they had been, the water would not have hurt the cypress. Cypress loves water!
Fortunately for the antique shop owners, the worst is now over and prices have returned to close to normal.
Since the antique business in the city has now recovered a little more from the hurricane, this web page will be revised and expanded and some of the bargains I find will be presented.
1. Political Collectibles - Presidential Signatures . Many Americans have a compulsion to collect election advertising memorabilia and presidential signatures.
2. Politics 2008. Conservatism vs. liberalism is the biggest issue in U.S. politics today.
3. Globalization. Everyone is into globalization these days!
Hurricane Katrina shut down the antiques/collectibles business in New Orleans for a short time. Things are now getting back to normal
